A communication assistant & room facility control App for ICU patient

ABOUT

TechnicallySpeaking is an opensource project develped for NYU Langone Hospital ICU patients. The goal of this project is to create a solution that is user friendly for patient in the ICU, family and staff so that the patient can make their physical, psychological, and environmental needs known, improve comfort, and increase independence in both simple and critical medical decisions.

My Role

Product Design UX Design UI Design

Our team members are all from different backgrounds: hardware engineer, ICU medical assistant, developer. I play design role in this project, and I was able to work those amazing team members starting from research to the final delivery of our project.

What happens inside the ICU room

Below are several paipoints we found based on our research and interview. The solution of this project will be mainly focused on solving these painpoints.

Data that support our found

User Persona

Here is the user persona we drawed based on our interviews to find a clear picture of our users: patients and nurse/family members.

Final Solution

The structure of how does the solution work

Part 1: Assitive App

This video shows how does the vocal assistant work.

Highlight Features

User Flow

The design of this first user flow is failed due to it's complexity of the navigation with IOS screen scanning function.

The second user flow design is successed for users to easily navigate with IOS screen scanning function based on our user test.

Interface Design Concept

The layout is easy for the IOS switch control function to go through each functions. And the Z-shape helps to guide the user's eyes to read it quickly at the same time.

The interface is devided into two main areas: the navigation and the sub functional area. Then the left side navigation area isn devided into three straight forward areas for different functions.

Part 2: Hardware Solution

The engineer in our team finnally made a prototype of the hardware to control the app and the environment. The vide below demos how to turn on a light with our solution.

Awards & Team

Our project has won two round of the NYU Entrepreneurship Prototype Fund. The image below shows our team demo our project during a workshop.
